New Host

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

Ok… so everything is down again this week while I move over to dreamhost.  I’m getting a bit tired of managing so many servers so I’m going to move all my personal stuff over to a shared host.  Now that my email is hosted by google I was preety much wasting my two VPSs that used to serve as DB/Web and Email systems.  Dreamhost offers mysql 5, php 4 or 5, unlimited DBs and subdomains, static ips, easy ssl, and lots of other stuff that I used to have to host my own system for.

Up… sorta

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Well I got everything back up, but I’m not happy. I still have some fairly ugly stuff going on behind the scenes to make my theme work with the admin section over ssl. There are a couple of admin over ssl plugins that are supposed to make that unnecessary, but they don’t seem to be working at all. I’m not sure why this is not a developer priority sending login info in the clear is a real no no. Oh well, I guess I’m not willing to put up so I should shut up. Everything is up again for now… we will see if it stays that way.

New Motorcycle

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

I am now a biker… officially. I was in and out of the DMV satuday morning by 8:30am and I had a motorcycle by 2pm… preety good day all in all. There are photos in the gallery if you are interested.

New Server

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

So I finally bit the bullet and went with a vps instead of hosting from home. I was just getting fed up with slow upload speeds and trying to seperate my network properly into public and private areas. Now I won’t have to worry about that any more. I’m using a wonderfull service provided by http://www.quantact.com which is located here in San Francisco. Anyway, let me know if there are any problems.

Jon Johnson, MA

Well it is official, my thesis is finally done and I have my Masters Degree in Educational Administration. Much thanks to my very supportive wife and Joanna who advised me throughout the project. I will probably get around to posting the paper here at some point when I get around to revising this site yet again.

Brand New Photo System

Monday, February 13th, 2006

The transition to flickr is now complete and the gallery has been moved over to their servers. This means several things.

  1. My bandwidth isn’t being eaten up by photos
  2. everything is much faster
  3. everything will get updated a lot more frequently because flicker is easier to use than the system I had built for myself
  4. Categories can get much more fluid and I will soon have some other cool stuff

You can also check out my photos directly at http://www.flickr.com/photos/jonjohnson

This transition was made possible mainly because of the fantastic php library at http://www.phpflickr.com/Â so many thanks go out there.

This is defiantly a step towards the future of web 2.0 as multiple services can be combined to create fluid dynamic user experiences…. enjoy.

bit o’ news

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

Ok Well I have been a bit busy to post much of anything new over the last couple of weeks what with the holidays and the beginning of the new quarter at work… anyway I just wanted to announce that we are now running WP 2.0. Which means absolutely nothing to you, but on this end there are a slew of design improvements that are just amazing. I wanted to give a quick shout out to the programmers of this fantastic publishing suite!

In other news I expect to get some new photos up in the next couple of days as well as finally publishing my mythtv install guide.

Until then…

Google Adsense

Thursday, December 1st, 2005

I’ve been promoting Firefox from day one, as many of you are completely aware. However recently google announced that they would pay for every successful new Firefox installation. So…. if you haven’t started using Firefox yet then please click the button and install it. I promise you won’t be let down. Firefox really is the next big thing, it is doing everything better that IE already and it will only continue to get better.

Welcome

Day 1. Worpress setup took even less than the 5 (as advertised) Minutes. I highly recommend this piece of software for beginners as it was pain free to install and get running… now I just need to secure the login and put together a new theme.
